Summary/Abstract: Scientific papers on the relationship between the Church and the state in Byzantium represent an important segment of the scientific work of Archimandrite Filaret Granić, a former professor of canon law at the Orthodox Theological Faculty in Belgrade. The first in a series of papers in which we will deal with Granić’s canonical scientific heritage aims to evaluate his contribution to Serbian canonical science through the analysis of his works in the mentioned field. Studying in developed academic environments abroad enabled Professor Filaret Granić to enrich himself with unusual knowledge in areas relevant to dealing with canon law. Professor Granić’s works show exceptional knowledge of church history, Byzantology, and the history of law, but also the lack of a significant presence of theological elaboration, primarily from the aspect of ecclesiology. The influence of the German, but also the Belgian, French, Irish, Romanian, Italian, Russian and domestic historiographical schools can be noticed. With his diverse and extensive scientific opus and great dedication to historical and legal science, Professor Filaret Granićis an unavoidable person in the analysis of Serbian canonical and legal science inthe 20th century. Granić’s works in this field show an enviable degree of scientific competence and that modern science confirmed the vast majority of conclusions that the author came to in his research.
