The meaning explanation in German monolingual print dictionaries

Summary/Abstract: Meaning explanations are complex semantic comments that consist of several types of information. Each of these types of information is associated with specific possibilities and problems of representation, the implementation or solution of which is not always easy in the practice of lexicography. We analyze in this article the formulation and arrangement of meanings, the representation of homonymy and polysemy, the selection of the best lexicographical example, labeling, the etymological information, and the illustrations.
