Summary/Abstract: The poem ‘Czerny George’, written by Rev. George Croly, is one of the earliest verses dedicated to the leader of the First Serbian Uprising (1804/1813) and the first ruler of modern Serbia – Karađorđe Petrović, Black George (1769–1817). It was published just ten weeks following the assassination of Karađorđe, and five weeks after the news had reached the British Isles. Although the poem is well known, its full literary translation into the Serbian language has not yet been the subject of a study in its own right.
