Summary/Abstract: The regaining of independence by our country in 1918 opened wide opportunities for the activities of the Church, including the Salesian Society. In line with the charism of Fr. John Bosco, the Salesians were particularly involved in the field of education. They opened around a dozen general and vocational schools and orphanages. The outbreak of World War II brought this activity to a stop. Poland was divided into three zones. The first was included in the structures of the Third Reich. The second constituted the General Governorship. The third zone was under the Soviet occupation. The most difficult conditions prevailed in the so-called Warthegau, where gradually all Salesian school and education institutions were closed. The General Governorship enjoyed relatively the greatest freedom. Using the official church structures, the Salesians organized clandestine teaching, hid persons of Jewish origin, and tried to work with young people as much as it was possible under the circumstances.
