Summary/Abstract: Simeon Popescu, born in Râpa de Jos in 1848, was educated both in Romania, at Sibiu and Blaj, and also abroad, at Leipzig. He was a priest and teacher in Sibiu and later on in Bucharest. He played an important part in the creation of the Cultural League (a league promoting the cultural unity of all Romanians) in Bucharest. Nevertheless, when he died, in 1919, this event was hardly mentioned by the newspapers of the time. An important exception was Nicolae Iorga, who published a brief, but pertinent, article in Neamul Românesc. A very impressive article, praising the activity and personality of Simeon Popescu, was also written and published by Gheorghe Cotenescu.
