Summary/Abstract: The article is concerned with the legend of St Adalbert and his role in the history of the Polish state. The Saint’s stay in Poland and his martyr’s death are presented on the basis of two Polish chronicles from the 16th century. Their authors are Marcin Kromer and Marcin and Joachim Bielskis. They show a close connection between the person of St Adalbert and his death on the one hand, and the beginnings of building the structures of the Church in the first Piasts’ Poland. The two works present the most important events in the development of the Church in Poland after accepting baptism in 966.
