Summary/Abstract: The study of Herta Müller’s novel Herztier deals with the urban milieu at the mercy of totalitarian state power. The actors of the urban society are traumatized by oppression, persecution and interrogation; as a result human relationships are destroyed and the protagonists experience a loss of their own identity. Actions, places and one’s own body are also alienated and perceived in partial images. It is precisely the fragmentary character of the prose texts that enables an interpretation oriented towards spatiality. The dynamic change of place and persons, the interruption of the chronological sequence spatialize time, it appears not as a course but as a segment.
