Summary/Abstract: The banal character of Baudelaire’s abysses from Paris Spleen, the abyss of modern life, corresponds to the romantic and emphatic depiction of the abyss in Flowers of Evil. This other and different poetry of the abyss encourages us to re-read Baudelaire’s poetic and literary-critical work - especially Painter of Modern Life, in which Baudelaire developed theoretical thought about modernity, i.e. about the relationship between modern life and artistic creation. Therefore, this study re-examines Baudelaire’s conception of the modern and connects it with its poetic expression.
