Turkish Validity and Reliability Study of the Somatization Emotion Conflict Scale

Summary/Abstract: The aim of the study is to conduct the Turkish adaptation and validity and reliability study of the Somatization Emotion Conflict Scale (SECS). The participants of the study consisted of 264 people, 193 women (73.1%) and 71 men (26.9%) in the age range of 18-60 (24.74 ± 9.13), consisting of university students and a community sample. It was applied to 43 university students the SECS three weeks interval for test-retest reliability and were applied to 60 university students to Short Symptom Inventory (BSI) and Health Anxiety Inventory (SAI) together with SECS for criterion-related validity. Data were evaluated by Cronbach Alpha Coefficient, Pearson moments multiplication correlation test and exploratory factor analysis (EFA). The Cronbach Alpha coefficients of the scale ranged from .82 to .90 and test-retest correlations ranged from .70 to .89. Correlation results for criterion-related validity were found between .26 and .70. AFA findings were also found to be suitable for factor analysis and the factor loadings of scale items were at a very high level. In this study SECS is found to be a valid and reliable scale that can be used in academic studies and clinical settings in Turkey.
