Summary/Abstract: Flaubert's correspondence is extremely important, because it encompasses everything in the author's work – all his critical and literary thoughts, the very process of literary creation, all his rages and torments, all sudden changes ranging from ecstasy to suppression. Whether he corresponded with Louise Colet, Louis Bouilhet, Victor Hugo or Guy de Maupassant … all their exchanges are, among other things, an analysis of Flaubert's genius and a consideration of art as Maurice Schöne has put it. Our retrospective study of Flaubert's talent is aimed at the limitations of the subjective and incomplete form of the letters and at the aesthetic of sacrifice and "suppression" of the author in Madame Bovary.
