Summary/Abstract: The term “phrase”, which is at the heart of Baudelaire's and Flaubert's aesthetics, had neither the same meaning nor the same connotation as today. In the paper, we notice that in these two writers, the sentence-phrase is at the same time in the function of the classical ideal, but also a departure from it, which is directly related to the issue of social and literary activity. It is within this linguistic paradox that style itself is outlined. To demonstrate this, we will observe “samples” of phrasesentences, analyzing the way in which this linguistic phenomenon is set out in the writing.
