FREE INDIRECT SPEECH IN MADAME BOVARY BY G. FLAUBERT AND ITS EQUIVALENTS IN SERBIAN TRANSLATION

Summary/Abstract: In this paper, we analyze the phenomenon of free indirect speech in Flaubert's novel Madame Bovary. In the literature, we have come across two different views regarding free indirect speech in Flaubert's work. Namely, some claim that Flaubert invented free indirect speech in his work (Philip, 2016), while others claim that it is actually a “widespread myth” (Janson 2006, 16). It should be noted that free indirect speech in Flaubert's work has specific characteristics that facilitate its recognition in the text, which is generally not the case. Having in mind the facts mentioned, we will consider free indirect speech as part of Flaubert's individual style. Therefore, our goal will not be to determine forms and types of free indirect speech in the novel but to explain its role, and to determine differences or similarities in the Serbian translation of Flaubert's novel. We shall take into account the complexity of his style, the sequence of tenses in French, and the difficulty in identifying free indirect speech in Serbian.
