Summary/Abstract: In Search of Lost Time is a benchmark for 20th century Italian culture. Under the influence of Croce and Bergson, literary critics such as D’Ambra, Nomenclator, Tonelli, Debenedetti, Cecchi, Tilgher, Banfi Malaguzzi have praised this work, in which will, subjectivism and introspection triumph. Writers such as Ungaretti, Borgese, Bontempelli, Morselli even adhere to the Proustian conception of literature. The permanence of the Proustian novel, as well as the attempts to conceal it, are proof of the fascination it evoked in Italian intellectuals, who would rather “go ahead with their heads turned back” (Svevo, Pavese, Pirandello, Morante, Bassani). In Proust's wake, thanks to specific writing techniques, they deliver the very essence of beings and places.
