Summary/Abstract: This article analyzes the influence that the figure and work of Giovanni Papini had on Mircea Eliade, focusing especially on the relationship between the autobiographical Novel of the Nearsighted Adolescent, of the illustrious Romanian philosopher, and The Failure of the controversial Italian writer and intellectual. Starting from the analysis of references in Mircea Eliade’s diary prose on Giovanni Papini and to the influence that the latter’s work had on the entire Romanian ‘young generation’, we will try to show that the correspondence of themes and ideas between the two intellectuals cannot be considered accidental. Eliade is the most prominent figure of that generation of Romanian intellectuals dominated by the so-called "huliganism", a generation for which all rules are reinterpreted if not actually cancelled. Papini's influence is particularly evident in the Novel of the Nearsighted Adolescent, a prose that, as the author himself specified, is not to be intended as a result of artistic creation, but rather as a model of personal confession, that is, a mirror of his own soul.
