Summary/Abstract: By using examples from corpora and other digital collections of texts, the authors prove that the word digitalizacja (‘digitization’), which nowadays refers mostly to activities and processes connected to computer technology, has functioned in the Polish language since at least the 1930s. In the past it was a medical term used to describe treating a patient with medication created with the plant digitalis. It was, however, absent in the general dictionaries of the Polish language. In the 1970s, the word was re-borrowed (from English) in the meaning of ‘creating digital copies of objects existing in real life’. In this meaning it persists in texts written in Polish up to this day. New meanings of the word are also emerging.
