Summary/Abstract: By accepting Benjamin’s theses on the emerging of a perception in the form of “shock”, which in the 19th and 20th century replaced the so-called “auratic” form of perception, we hereby suggest a cross-reading of Baudelaire, Flaubert, and Proust to identify perceptive modernity as it has been experimented in the literature. In particular, we try to consider the transformation of perception witnessed by the aforementioned authors by connecting the chapter from Madame Bovary on the agricultural fair to the “ouverture pour un jour de fête” from La Prisonnière, both considered here as counterparts which are quite as strong as Les Fleurs du mal and Le Spleen de Parisfor Baudelaire. We then indicate that perceptive modernity, unlike matching with the domination of shock perception due to the disappearance of auratic perception, can be characterized by an oscillation between the former and the latter, as well as by their reversibility, which is always possible and imminent.
