Summary/Abstract: The French Fifth Republic is a classic example of a semi- residential political system. One of its main characteristics is the possibility of cohabitation in times when the parliamentary majority belongs to the political option opposing the president. In France, this situation emerged three times. The article analyzes features of cohabitation in the rench semi-presidential system and the specifics of each of the three cohabitation cases. In the periods of cohabitation, the center of the political power transfers from the president, its traditional bearer, to the prime minister, who rises from his subordinate position. lthough the president keeps his significant role, the political agenda is shaped by the prime minister. On the other hand, the length of the cohabitation period, a potential rivalry of the two actors in the upcoming presidential elections and the size of the parliamentary majority supporting the rime minister are factors that cause differences in relations between the two eaders of the executive in each of the three cohabitation cases.
