Summary/Abstract: Is matter or meaning heavier? Do you prefer a body without a soul or a soul without a body? From the moment we are born, we open up to experience life with our soul in the process of making sense of our existence in the depths of our minds. The movie Cold Souls (Sophie Barthes, 2009) opens the spectator with many areas of questioning with its conventions that bear the characteristics of the science-fiction genre and remind the black comedy genre, as well as opening the window to the path of thinking deeply about the relationship of the soul with the body. It also allows us to make sense of our existence from this window. Likewise, the movie gives the first sign of focusing on the soul with the sentence “The passions of the soul are the chief in the small ornament placed in the middle of the brain” from Rene Descartes’ The Passions of the Soul (1649) work. This study questions the relationship between soul and body in the context of knowledge and moral understanding based on Plato’s approach to the philosophy of spirituality. The discourses about the concept of the soul will be tried to be elaborated with the references Plato gives from Socrates’ thoughts, and the concepts of soul, body, and existence presented by the film narrative to the spectators will be discussed. According to Descartes, the most important aim of the human is to target the supreme good in all works and to ensure the satisfaction of the soul. Therefore, when the protagonist of the film Paul attempts to seek his soul in the path of good in his search for his soul, does he open the window of living a supreme good life to his soul? Descartes’ thoughts on the duality of soul and body, which are parallel to those of Plato, are supported by references to make sense of all the inquiries in the study from a different perspective and allow many questions to be discussed.
