The Initiative of the Unionists to Found A National Ferry Company in the Second Constitutional Era: The Ottoman Incorporated Company of İttihâd Seyr u Sefâ’in

Summary/Abstract: The Ottoman Incorporated Company of İttihâd Seyr u Sefâ'in was founded in Thessaloniki in 1911 by a handful of entrepreneurs. Among them was Eyüp Sabri Bey, a leading figure of the Ittihadists. Its first ferry, İttihad, was seized by Greece at the port of Piraeus shortly after the company started commerce activities. Although the Ottomans reclaimed İttihad after the Balkan Wars, it was later captured by the Russians in the Black Sea during World War One. The company was eventually transferred over to the Republic of Turkey. It played an active role in transporting refugees during the Turkish-Greek Population Exchange. This study tries to show how a maritime company – established within the frame of the concept of national economy concept by the Committee of Union and Progress during the Second Constitutional Era, and under the patronage of Ottoman-Turkish society – was impacted by the challenging conditions caused by war, and how it managed to persevere against all odds. The findings we have reached are mainly based on documents from the Directorate of the State Archives and the copyright and examination materials directly related to the subject.
