Mythological and Historical Personalities in Ṣubḥī Faḥmāwī's Novels

Summary/Abstract: Palestinian origin author Ṣubḥī Faḥmāwī, utilizes different subjects in an inventive style in his novels. Faḥmāwī, refers to many related issues in the main subject by forming a narrative cycle. Mythological and historical figures are the crucial elements of his style. In his novels, he mentions the mythological figures of the Middle East, but specifically the Ken‘ani myths on different occasions. For instance, at Qiṣṣat ʻishq kanʻānīyah mythology is intensely processed. Myths such as İl, Ba'al, Ishtar (Ashtoret), Mot constitute an important part of the plotline. Additionally, Faḥmāwī mentions many personalities who have positive or negative reputations in his novels. In the storyline, the characters are not chosen randomly even if they are mythological, historical or actual. Whilst each of these characters constitutes an important aspect of the narration for a better understanding, the reader also is acquainted with these characters. In this article, it will be tried to determine the mythological and historical figures mentioned in the novels of Ṣubḥī Faḥmāwī, one of the contemporary Jordanian novelists. After revealing what aspects of these identified personalities are famous for, their prominent aspects in the fiction of the novel will be examined. In addition, the reasons for the preference of these individuals in terms of context will also be examined.
