Summary/Abstract: Cultural, communication and language competences are crucial for the quality of human life. The development of these competences should be supported and stimulated at the early stages of childhood. One of the forms of influencing a child in the educational and upbringing process is the contact with literature understood as reception, interpretation and communication. Literary texts influence the best shape of relationships – they can be used for stimulation (conscious learning), prophylaxis (prevention of disorders or difficulties) and therapy (action correction, psychotherapy, revalidation). Both classic stories (legends, fairy tales, poetry) and the latest stories (therapeutic fairy tales, including the special ones, for example: speech therapy) have a positive influence on child development. Their effectiveness is conditioned by a proper choice of the literary text, adjusted to the individual situation and the abilities of the child. Literature is also a perfect carrier of cultural, linguistic and communication patterns in a multicultural environment, as well as it provides a basis for building a social dialogue among children and young people.
