Summary/Abstract: Abstract: The main objective of this article is to reveal a comic potential in metafiction, by first analyzing Bakhtin's theory of humour and the question of irony vs. empathy as the main methodological contexts, and then by then illustrating this phenomenon using Witold Gombrowicz’s drama Operetta (1966). The article shows that in Operetta metafiction employs literary tools, such as intertextuality, irony, metafictional-eque characters, which not only specify the relationship of the work with the literary and socio-cultural universe and, by decomposing the construction of fiction, penetrate reality itself, and also hold a certain potential for humour.
