New Biotechnologies of Artificial Insemination in Horses

Summary/Abstract: The article briefly describes the history of artificial insemination in mare, beginning with the legendary Arabian story about the first insemination using a sponge to transfer the semen, carried forth to present times, with some references to different techniques used in the past and nowadays. The author presents some advantages, disadvantages, and the most important steps of this complex technology, with references to Romanian regulations. He shortly describes the semen collection, evaluation and preservation process, and finally the way in which semen is used for artificial insemination, along with some insemination techniques and expected results.
