Summary/Abstract: The text provides some basic information about sects (new religious movements). It presents the etymology of this term, then focuses on substitute terms. Also further attempts to grasp the definition of this phenomenon are described, the relations between sects and religion and between sects and Church are analyzed, and several classifications of sects are presented. The author highlights the main difficulties accompanying research in sects and alternative religious movements. Finally, the question follows if it is likely that a new scientific field of sectology/sect studies can emerge.
