Summary/Abstract: In his Life of St Macrina Gregory of Nyssa presents his sister as a teacher of “philosophy” (i.e. life devoted to God) and a model of virtue, which is understood here as a way of overcoming of passions by reason. Hence Macrina seems to be a female counterpart to Moses as pictured in Gregory’s “On the Soul and Resurrection”, a dialogue in which he and Macrina were engaged when his sister was on her deathbed.
