Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the problem of how bilingual children speaking Ukrainian andPolish and living in Poland understand and comprehend the Ukrainian cultural codes from folk tales.Research on the speech of bilingual Ukrainian children is a highly relevant direction in modernlinguistics. Cultural codes are a key part of each culture. The aim of the research is to indicate andanalyse how bilingual Ukrainian children living abroad understand cultural codes submerged in thenames of well-known characters from Ukrainian folk tales. The ability to define describe and understandthese characters shows the children’s knowledge of Ukrainian folktales and the connotationsof selected proper names. The analysis of the surveys reveals how the peculiarities of cultural codesare identified, understood and explained by native speakers under the influence of external lingualand cultural factors.
