Silver Economy Development – Challenges and Opportunities

Summary/Abstract: The article presents current empirical data, gathered through a devoted desk research, on the basis of which trends are drawn that show sustainable tendency of population ageing – not only in Europe, but also in Bulgaria. Based on the prediction for the demographic development in European Union and in Bulgaria, and the needs stemming from this, characterized by growing longevity, and by constant increase of the share of elderly in the overall population, the article discusses and suggests elements of an optimal mix of policies, instruments and measures, which shall pave the way for addressing in the best possible way the relevant challenges and grasp the opportunities. The aim is to provide the relevant European, national and regional institutions with objective analysis and information to allow them making forward-looking governing decisions, while benchmarking the best European practices.
