Summary/Abstract: This paper presents an approach to determine the electromagnetic coupling coefficient between working circuits in symmetrical cables for telecommunications. The calculations give exact results for any two arbitrarily spaced circuits. The conclusions are drawn that the approach, is difficult to apply in practice. This is due to the large complexity of the transformations and its dependence on a very large number of parameters. In many cases, many of these parameters are not known in advance, but are subject to the design or optimization process itself. The large number of parameters would make the optimization process extremely difficult in the search for extremums of the constraint equation. In a bundle design, the computations are very laborious. A new mathematical model of the cable has to be created for each case, even with minimal differences in the design. Attention is drawn to the fact that, on the other hand, in the design process it is not necessary to know the exact value of the electromagnetic coupling coefficient between which two circuits. It is necessary to know its critical value for certain groups of conductors (e.g. group, bundle or call) which determines the lowest values of transient attenuation at the near and far ends and the highest values of capacitive and magnetic coupling between the circuits. Expressions need to be suitable for use in automated design and include parameters that can be easily determined. Such are all the radial dimensions of the cable structural elements. Despite the large number of parameters, these can be measured and the calculations automated by creating an appropriate software algorithm. A prerequisite has been established for the creation of software to calculate the electromagnetic coupling coefficient between any two working circuits, by means of the coordinates of the conductors in a complex plane. This can be done by deriving expressions enabling the value of the electromagnetic coupling coefficient to be calculated based on the radial components of the elements involved in the cable.
