Summary/Abstract: We may today appreciate Şincai not only as the main character of its own biography, but also as an objective observer of it and, finally, one of its most realistic commentators. That is because his work Elegia is but an amount of autobiographic aspects. Gheorghe Şincai seems to be very consciously about his own identity and probably the most important of its aspects is nobility. We may observe some changes, not only in his attitude about Romanian history, about human condition etc., but especially in his oppinion concerning human dignity. Noble by birth, he always considered that nobility must be proved by a public career – diplomatic, politic, scientific, military etc. – and, more than that, it must be proved by honour. Another aspect of his identity is represented by the idea of responsibility. As a noble, he has the chance to study at superior schools and, therefore, he has some responsabilities for his people. As an educated man, he has to offer his knowledges to his people. In this way, Şincai succeded in creating some kind of a prototype – the noble who sacrifices himself for the crowd and established a new model of nobility, that did not take into consideration the “blood”, but the imperial origins of all Romanians.
