Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses the origin of the mythological motif of “diving for earth” in East Europe. The author believes that this myth had its origin among the Uralo-Altaic Peoples in South Siberia, as he has argued earlier. Still, in this paper he puts forward the hypothesis that the archaic North Russian versions of this plot should not be explained with a Finno-Ugric substratum but rather with the influence of the Avars and Bulgars. To the development and preservation of this motif contributed, in all likelihood, the post-Bogomil apocryphal tradition. This plot was well preserved North Russian “refridgerator” while in South (including in the Bulgarian tradition) it developed more “Christianised” variants.
