The translation experiment of Grigor Purlichev and the Bulgarian folklore epic tradition

Summary/Abstract: In the “Chitalishte” magazine which is published in Constantinople, in 1871 appeared a part of the translation of the fi rst two songs of the poem “The Iliad” done by Grigor Purlichev. It is done at the Marko Balabanov editor’s personal request and that fact change into precedent; for first time the Bulgarian reader – non-specialist has possibility to contact with one of the most significant poem for the ancient Greek culture. Another specificity of the translation is that it is made with declared aspiration for indirectly following of the original. Purlichev rather behaves as rhapsode than translator. He makes a communicative translation which is orientated to the reader. Chronological, this is the first attempt at genre translating in the tradition of translation of ancient literature in our country (the second attempt is of A. Razcvetnikov during 30 years of XX century). The translator in his work uses the poetics of the Bulgarian folklore epic tradition. This attempt deserves not only linguistics, but cultural evaluation.
