Summary/Abstract: There is a relatively renewed debate about world government and world state in recent years, as well as renewed traditional denial of the ideas, nowdays called “globoscepticism”. As this debate repeatedly comes alive, and since skepticism towards global political organization has been a very old phenomenon, this paper refers to its origins among the classical liberal thinkers of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, as well as to their predecessors. The paper gives an overview of attitudes towards global political organization of the states among classical liberal thinkers, and concludes that they identified inability and undesirability of the idea that states may voluntarily give up their sovereignty and transfer it to a higher, global authority.
