Summary/Abstract: Christianity, and in that context the monasticism are one of the fundamental factors, which affected not only the process of establishing the religious identity, but indirectly or directly influenced on identity in national sense. The general impression is that the monasticism in Macedonia worked on the basis of nationality, which means there was an active communication between the monks and the Macedonian people. The protagonists of monasticism during the long time of history acted on the realization of religious and ritual practices and supported the idea for introduction the vernacular language and literacy as a basic substrates within the frame of creation of national identity. Because of their activity and personal engagement regarding the question of Macedonian identity the names (already mentioned in the paper) of these monks were deeply engraved in the collective memory of the Macedonian people, in history and tradition at all.
