Author(s): Ivan Dzeparoski
Subject(s): Identity of Collectives
Published by: Институт за македонска литература
Keywords: Macedonia; Balkan; Macedonian salad; Balkan tavern; Otherness, identity

Summary/Abstract: The article is an attempt to approach historically and culturally to the collocations “Macedonian salad” and “Balkan tavern” in the context of the questions concerned with the “otherness” and “identity”. All those questions are considered through several examples connected with the view of the Other and from the standpoint of the stereotypes constructed on the Balkans, especially on Macedonia, in the domain of literature (travel writing) and visual representations (cartoons – satirical pictures). The text also, through an ironic and catachrestic approach, offers possibilities for a different reading of the analyzed and formerly established stereotypes.
