Essayism in Bulgaria

Summary/Abstract: In this 1941 article, the author reviews the origins of the Bulgarian essayistic writings. The article presents some of the best essays written by Bulgarian writers during the first half of the 20-th century. Atanas Iliev outlines the weaknesses and strengths of the genre in its Bulgarian context. The form of the essay gives an unlimited freedom of expression synthesizing reason and emotion but it could easily result in an imitative and derivate texts lacking depth and originality. The essay writings in Bulgaria are described as an intellectual fashion. Among the evaluated writers are Konstantin Galabov, Kril Krastev, Spiridon Kazandziev, Chavdar Mutafov, Nayden Sheytanov, Yanko Yanev, Boyan Bolgar and others.
