Summary/Abstract: This essay is dedicated to explaining laughter, but from fundamentally differentconditions and factors of life in the Middle Ages. In order to recognise this historical and mentaldistance, two concepts that Hans-Jürgen Bachorski and Werner Roecke introduced intoresearch around 2000, the "laughter community" and the "reasons to laugh", are re-examinedand the conditions are sounded out in order to emphasise factors for an explanatory modelof laughter in the Middle Ages. However, the Freudian orientation is not adopted. In additionto the risus paschalis, a custom during the Easter liturgy, a minnelied and two prose poems,Der Weinschwelg and Die böse Frau, are described as examples in their communicative performancewith regard to the reasons to laugh.
