Summary/Abstract: After Romania and Bulgaria joined the European Union on 1 January 2007, the EU grew to 27 member states. By affiliating Romania and Bulgaria, the EU has demonstrated its opinion on Balkan countries in general: they are regarded as part of Europe. The states of the former Yugoslavia, amongst them Croatia and Serbia, now find themselves surrounded by EU member states to the north, south and east. Consequently, their expectations towards co-operation with the EU are rising, a co-operation which might, in the end, lead to another expansion of the EU. This article analyses the progress of Croatia and Serbia on their way to becoming a member of the European Union and illustrates the chances of these two countries for a speedy accession.
