Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with the etymology of Proto-Slavic *grędelь/*grędělь ‘plow-beam’ and gives new evidence for its Proto-Germanic origin – from *grindila- ‘beam, plow-beam’. This thesis is based on Y. Khelimsky’s reconstruction of the Proto-Slavic word as *grędilь which includes the regular realization of Proto-Slavic *i in Hung. [ё] in loanwords from the Slavic languages, cf. Hung. gёrёndёly ‘plow-beam’. The Slavic lexical and word-formation data provide additional arguments for the presented etymology.
