Summary/Abstract: In this essay we suggest a parallelism between Biserica neagră by Anatol Baconsky and the short story, La terreur future, included in Marcel Schwob’s La Légende des Gueux (1891), in order to demonstrate a possible influence by Schwob on Baconsky’s work. The theme of the oppression of History that plagues a City in the guise of a secret and murderous sect, is in fact found in both of the works. We extend our analysis to another of Schwob’s short stories, La mort d’Odijgh, which shares with Biserica neagră the same apocalyptic magic of Winter in which are discernible the metallization of strange phenomena and the beginnings of an „alchemical transformation”. Finally, Schwob and Baconsky share the same crepuscular esthetic, and the specific use of adjectives that the two authors have in common with the poetics of Decadentism in the manner of Joris Karl Huysmans in À rebours will be underlined.
