Summary/Abstract: This paper presents some of the objectives of European language education policies and their implications for foreign language teaching. A number of recommendations, conclusions, and other acts issued by the Council of Europe and European institutions have been analyzed in order to explain the main objectives and concepts of European language education policies: plurilingualism, linguistic diversity, intercultural dialogue, democratic citizenship and social cohesion and their implications for foreign language teaching. The paper also offers a critical review of European language education policies and the presence of these concepts in formal education in Serbia. The aim of this paper is to increase awareness of the part played by languages in offering equal opportunity for personal development, education, employment, mobility, access to information and cultural enrichment.
