Summary/Abstract: The development of engineering students is more often associated with classroom learning, but there is an increasing need for online learning. This study tests students' impressions of a specialized massive open online course. Engineering students from the Russian Federation and Ukraine (n = 295) were involved to the empirical part. According to the results, 84% of the participants had difficulty in using the knowledge gained during the course. In this paper, the authors suggest ways of improving online courses for students so that what they learn can be put into practice. On average, it will take universities 4.5 - 8 years to completely switch from face-to-face classes to the use of MOOCs.
