Summary/Abstract: This paper examines the attitudes of parents of early and pre-school children on the tasks of the educational institution in the form of encouragement and development of children’s competences. The aim of the research was to determine which competences parents attach to the most important and what their parents point out as crucial to the child’s learning in the kindergarten. It is based on the assumption that parents as the main competences that a child in kindergarten have to develop are considered to be the ones that relate to preparation and readiness for school, or competences that are linked to the academic achievement of children. The research was attended by parents of children of early and pre-school age (N=132) who are attending kindergartens whose founders are local units in Međimurje County. The results indicate that parents highly assess the importance of preparing for elementary school, while on the other hand reading, writing, numeracy and foreign language skills are relatively low in relation to the development of competences relating to child collaboration with other children, sharing of interests with others, the development of self-confidence, the child’s concern about himself, free activities. Parents up to 29 years of age co-operation of a child with other children statistically significantly consider it important than parents between the ages of 30 and 39, as well as that it is important for the child in the kindergarten to manage the reading skills. Lower educated parents are more likely to evaluate the competences associated with the skills of reading, writing and counting and social competences of parents with higher education.
