Summary/Abstract: Sustainable tourism represents a form of tourism that generates economic benefits for the local community while taking into account the preservation of the ecosystems and cultural heritage of the area. A favorable base for sustainable tourism is provided by those rural areas that have retained their natural, social and cultural authenticity. This paper discusses the role and significance of the indicators of sustainable tourism in the Stara Planina Mountain area, and discusses the state of affairs and the possibilities for its development.
