Summary/Abstract: Nathaniel Hawthorne in his most mature and complex literary work The Marble Faun succeeded to weave in an original manner the Gothic and historic elements, the real and the legend, with the dominant presence of symbols which present one of the essential features of his style in all of his romances. One of the relevant contrasts in this romance is the contrast between America, Protestantism and youth on one hand, and the Eternal City, Catholicism and tradition on the other. Hawthorne does not deal with the past here the way he dealt with it in The Scarlet Letter but in a specific manner succeeds to interconnect three spheres – past, present and future. It is also evident that in The Marble Faun there are a lot of inset stories which make this romance highly abundant. The aim of this paper is to discuss the most important features of the aforementioned Hawthorne's piece of writing.
