Vatican Secretariat of State on the situation in the Diocese of Katowice during the exile of the Silesian bishops in 1952-1956

Summary/Abstract: The present study complements the existing knowledge about the exile of the bishops of Katowice in the years 1952–1956. Based on so far unknown materials from the Archives of the Vatican Secretariat of State, the author presents mechanisms of convey information to Holy See about the situation in Silesia at a time when official means of communication were difficult and controlled by the communist authorities. He also reveals to the readers the backstage of the actions taken by the Holy See in relation to the chapter curates imposed by the communist authorities. We learn about the exceptional role of bishop Józef Gawlina in theseevents.
