Summary/Abstract: The social and economic changes that took place in the 19th century led to serious public health problems. The solution to the problems was the construction of a modern water supply and sewerage network. In Europe, however, the construction of these utilities has not been uniform. Implementation has been strongly influenced by political elites, economic actors, social transformations, and the pace of urban development. In this paper, I will present the relationships between water supply, sewerage, and urban society.
