Summary/Abstract: Technical projects are an important part of the practical training of future engineers. Most of the time, the projects assigned to the students have no other purpose than the educational one because the emphasis is on understanding and applying certain concepts related to a particular core topic of a subject. This paper aims to present the possibility of adding an extremely important value that is created within the practical projects received by the students, namely awareness of emergency situations. Within the project of "Microprocessor systems" course (3rd year, specialization of Systems Engineering) the group of authors has implemented a method that allows students to accumulate both the practical knowledge specific to the subject but also specific knowledge of monitoring and alert in case of emergencies in the university campus. Even if at first sight there does not seem to be a problem that raises great educational challenges, the practical implementation requires a delicate methodology from the point of view of guiding the students in a complementary practical context. Students must work together to develop and implement an emergency monitoring and warning system on the university campus. The development of the monitoring and alarm system will provide the specific technical learning component and the implementation will provide complementary components related to project management and emergency situations. The proposed methodology includes assigning tasks within a group of students, managing the project development and evaluating the work of the students individually. Besides achieving the objectives of vocational training and civic education, the proposed method also has a role in developing the team skills within the group of students.
