Summary/Abstract: Maps of Hungary from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries frequently include references to the 1526 battle of Mohács and the death of King Louis II, and several foreign travellers who went through Mohács likewise mentioned the town as the site of the battle. The first memorial at the battle site was erected by the Ottomans in the seventeenth century, while at the end of the eighteenth century the bishopric of Pécs initiated the local commemoration of the battle. After an aborted plan by the municipality of Mohács, in 1864 a private initiative led to the creation of a memorial site, but the grand-scale memorial scheme of 1926 was never realised.
