Summary/Abstract: Bohumila Grögerová and Josef Hiršal cultivated intensive contact with Western authors, above all in the 1960s, and primarily among German-language speakers (Hans Magnus Enzensberger, Ernst Jandl, Friederike Mayröcker, Reinhard Döhl, Helmut Heißenbüttel, etc.). This paper is devoted to the relationship of the two authors to Siegfried J. Schmidt, a German literary scholar, theoretician, visual artist and author of experimental texts. Proof of the intensity of their links can be found in the wealth of their correspondence. The basis of the research consists of Schmidt’s letters to the two authors between 1968 and 1994, lodged in the Literary Archive of the Museum of Czech Literature, together with the texts by Grögerová and Hiršal published in Schmidt’s anthology konkrete dichtung. texte und theorien (Concrete Poetry. Texts and Theories) of 1972; the memoirs of the two authors Let let (The Flight of Years) also serve as a foundation. The author of the paper deals on this basis with the reception of the works by Hiršal and Grögerová abroad, more closely with Schmidt’s theoretical approach to the poetry of the two authors. It proves, inter alia, that Schmidt committed considerable interpretational and ideological oversimplifications, which cause the poetic texts of the two authors to be noticeably deadened. The paper points out in that, on the contrary, Grögerová and Hiršal wrote very animated texts which emphasise political topics and ideas of creative and human freedom.
