Summary/Abstract: The paper seeks to resolve the question of the time of writing of King Stephen Dušan’s charter about lord Rudl of Strumica, considering that its chronological elements are at odds with one another: the document was either written on March 28, 1343 (according to the indiction) or 1345 (according to the year of creation). Document’s tradition is also discussed – it was issued to the Chilandari monastery, since the Serbian Athonite cloister was a recipient of the mentioned nobleman’s donatio post mortem and the charter was kept in monastery’s archives until 1931 when its trace was lost. The circumstances of the charter’s creation are considered in the context of the revised views on medieval diplomatic production. Since the arguments in favor of the opinion that the document’s content deserves full confidence, as well as that the known item could be original, diplomatic analysis is applied in an attempt to resolve the issue of the date, by comparing elements of the Rudl Charter formulary with corresponding parts of other documents issued in the period 1343–1345. The intitulation with the mention of „Greek lands“ and the arenga with the motif of ruler’s anointment, viewed in the context of the same or similar contents in the chronologically close corpus of documents, strongly support 1345 as the year of document’s issuing. The finding fits into the reconstructed itinerary of King Dušan during his campaign in northern Albania and Macedonia after May 1343. It is concluded that the legal action, agreed during an earlier meeting of the king and lords in Strumica (probably in the spring of 1343), was recorded two years later, on March 28, 1345, when Dušan found himself in that part of Macedonia again, and seemingly accompanied by prominent Chilandari brethren, namely Hegoumenos Arsenios and Warden Amphilochius.
